Holy Mass in German, at Benaulim, Goa

January 29, 2017

On Sunday, January 29, 2017, a Roman Catholic mass in German (with some prayers in English and Konkani) was held in St. Anthony's Chapel at Benaulim, Goa.

The mass was read by Rev. Fr. Joaquim Fernandes in concelebration with Rev. Fr. Brian Fernandes. Both priests belong to the Society of Pilar (Pilar fathers) in Goa and have been working as parish priests in Germany and Austria for many years.

Rev. Fr. Joaquim Fernandes is the parish priest of Vilgertshofen-Stoffen in the Diocese of Augsburg and Rev. Fr. Brian Fernandes of the parish of St. Michael at Steyr in Austria. Three more priests from Pilar are working in Bavaria. This mass in German was among others meant to thank God for the support to the Church in Germany by the priests from Goa.

The small chapel of St. Anthony in Benaulim was crowded, as the two priests moved in to the entrance song "Alles meinem Gott zu Ehren". Musical support came from two young people, sister and brother Jerome and Maria Vaz Sequeira, who had brought their keyboard, violin and even the trumpet. In his sermon, Rev. Fr. J. Fernandes, in reference to the anniversary of Gandhi's assassination on 30 January 1948, spoke about the disparity between God's word in the Bible (which Gandhi knew very well) and the reality of every day Christians. At the end of the celebration all sang the hymn "Grosser Gott, wir loben dich."

Following the worship service many of the churchgoers met for a snack in a shack on the nearby beach of Sernabatim.
